Senior Nico Bennett has been named the winner of South Windsor High School’s 2026 Graduation Poem Contest. Their poem was selected by a panel of teachers and Mrs. White, who organized the competition. As someone who believed they had no chance of winning, Bennett was surprised to learn of the committee’s choice, but they will now have the honor of reading their poem aloud at graduation for the Class of 2026.
“I was surprised I ended up winning because I knew of other talented poets that submitted. I definitely didn’t submit it confident thinking I would win,” Bennett told The Prowl.
Inspired by the emotions and uncertainty that come with graduation, Bennett successfully encapsulated those bittersweet feelings in just a few words. Mrs. White praised Bennett’s work, noting that it effectively captured the exact experiences many seniors face as the milestone approaches.
According to Bennett, writing the poem created a welcome opportunity to reflect on their own high school experience and think about the next chapter of life. The piece beautifully explores themes of growth, change, and the lasting memories students carry with them. By balancing excitement for the future with a deep appreciation for the relationships formed throughout high school, Bennett’s writing connected deeply with the committee by expressing feelings that many graduating seniors share. Winning this contest was a well-deserved honor for Bennett, providing recognition for their creativity and hard work.
“Focus on the future and what is coming the graduate’s way [whether it be] college, volunteering, etc,” Mrs. White told The Prowl, speaking to the poem’s forward-looking message.
To achieve this, Bennett utilized vivid descriptions, metaphors, and imagery to convey complex emotions, helping the audience visualize abstract concepts like excitement and nervousness. This descriptive writing is a key component of a graduation poem, allowing the author to transform conceptual feelings into concrete images that resonate with graduates, families, and teachers alike.
As graduation approaches, Bennett’s poem will serve as a reminder of the challenges, achievements, and memories that have shaped the Class of 2026. Through their words Bennett captured a moment that many of their classmates are experiencing as they prepare to move onto the next stage of their lives.
