Owen Jerr, a senior captain of the South Windsor boys volleyball team, has started off the season as one of the best players in the entire state.
The 6’5 beast, committed to Endicott to continue playing volleyball next year, has been an unstoppable force for the Bobcats, earning them a 5-3 start despite a very hard schedule.
He stands out in the CCC as one of the best middle hitters, with over 30 kills already in 8 games, on pace for well over 70.
Despite most “stand out” athletes having a love for the sport at a very young age, Jerr’s journey into volleyball began through an unexpected connection.
“I found volleyball as a result of the seniors on my cross country team freshman year,” Jerr said. “Once I stepped in the gym, I immediately felt at home.”
What started as a passion for running, turned into a passion for spiking. After his freshman year, Jerr began to discover where he truly belonged.
That same year, he tried out for Husky Volleyball Club, a competitive club team located in Windsor. There, Jerr earned a spot on the 16-1s team, quickly becoming a starter as he continued to develop at a very competitive level.
Jerr’s sophomore year marked a turning point. He proved himself capable of the starting middle position on the varsity team, ready to adjust himself to a higher level as a younger guy on the court. The learning curve was steep, but the challenge ultimately shaped him into the experienced player he is today.
By his junior year, his growth tremendously began to show. Competing on Husky’s 17-1s team, Jerr started every tournament and found a lot of confidence in his game. He pushed himself into constantly improving, spending extra hours with drills and in the gym.
At this point, Jerr was proving himself as a significant factor on South Windsor’s team, earning respect from all of his teammates and coaches.
“He’s the player that you wanna be on a team with,” senior outside hitter Kevin Senh told The Prowl, “…you won’t realize how good he is until you don’t have him beside you.”
Jerr shared with The Prowl that he’s looking to stay more and more hungry as the games go on, which he has no problem with so far. This season, Jerr is playing some of the best volleyball of his career, playing all six rotations which is rare for a middle hitter, highlighting his versatility on both offense and defense.
As he prepares for the next stage, Owen Jerr looks to bring the Bobcats on a deep run in both the CCC and state tournament before he takes his volleyball talents to Endicott College.
