South Windsor High School’s girls track team continues to impress the school community daily with their undefeated regular season record and standout performances across the board. Through hard work, leadership, and a strong bond, the Bobcats have become one of the top teams in the conference.
The team consists of many high class athletes, including Sofia Holovatska who leads the team with experience and talent. She is committed to compete in division 1 track and field at Quinnipiac University. Despite battling injuries earlier in the year, Holovatska has continued to succeed while motivating younger athletes around her.
“Personally this track season has been extremely memorable because it’s my senior season,” Holovatska told The Prowl. “I look forward to training with the underclassmen and serving as a mentor and leader to them. I’ve also had a really successful season despite coming off of injury and that’s shaped me a lot as an athlete”
Sofia continues to lead by example on her team by pushing the runners around her to their highest potential.
Although track and field is often viewed as an individual sport, the Bobcats have worked hard to create a close team atmosphere. Head coach, Coach McCullough, emphasized the importance of athletes putting the team first.
“I talk to the team about being willing to put the team first by running events they can score in during dual meets, cheering on their teammates, and celebrating their teammates’ personal bests,” McCullough said. “There is also an important team component to relays since without four individuals, the relay team can’t run so sometimes someone has to step up to fill a spot if there is an injury.”
The team’s chemistry has helped create confidence throughout the season. According to Holovatska, practices have become more focused as the team continues to improve.
“Having an undefeated season has given the team a lot of confidence and everyone comes to practice focused and ready to work,” Holovatska said.
In such a high intensity sport, it is important to find days to rest and recover after meets. Athletes have to maintain a strong work ethic while having communication and self-advocacy skills.
McCullough said, “Athletes should always work hard at practice to build their strength, speed, and endurance, but they also need to communicate with coaches if they are experiencing an injury and be willing to listen to and implement training solutions from their coaches.”
Open communication is key to a successful team environment where everyone feels confident and comfortable with one another. The athletes and coaches care about each other and all want to see their absolute best.
The Bobcats finished the regular season undefeated in dual meets and defeated strong programs such as EO Smith, Glastonbury, and East Hartford for the first time in years. The team also placed fifth out of 28 teams at the CCC Championship, proving that South Windsor’s girls track and field team is a successful and competitive program.
