After a good fight the first two games, the Bobcats softball team had their first win over Newington on April 8th. This was a well-earned win at the Bobcats second home game of the season.
Freshman Meghan Donovan, pitched her first full high school game and did a terrific job on the mound. Senior Briana LeGare also caught all 7 innings and made great plays behind the plate throughout the game.
In the first inning, the Bobcats got off to a slow offensive start, but their defense only allowed Newington one run.
Bobcat defense was strong throughout the entire game and the team energy was high and encouraging throughout every single play, keeping the field upbeat.
For the Bobcats, the bats started to get hot in the 3rd inning, allowing them to grab a lead ahead of Newington.
LeGare had a hard hit to right field in the bottom of the third inning and Newington was unable to put a glove on it which led to a safe arrival at 2nd base. She had another great hit in the bottom of the fifth inning which allowed Sienna Michaelson to make it to home safely making the score 5-2 over Newington.
It was definitely a team effort and the Bobcats gathered a total of 12 hits throughout the game and a great first win of the season. Over April break, the Bobcats had 4 games and won two.
“We’ve grown into a team that trusts each other, plays for each other, and never backs down-no matter the score,” senior Max Shuska said. Senior Brianna LeGare can second that.
“I think this season has started off amazing and this is the most talent I’ve seen come through the team in all my four years,” LeGare said, highlighting the potential the team has.
They mercied both Northwest Catholic and Windsor. The Bobcats had great bats and were able to drive in many runs and even a few in the park home runs against NWC. They maintained a clean defense and minimal errors which really helped them excel and keep a lead against the opposing teams.
After break, the Bobcats have 3 wins and 4 losses, which is a much improved record from the previous season.
The Bobcats have another busy week ahead with 3 games this upcoming week. On Monday the 20th, they’re away at East Catholic, on the 22nd, they’re away at Manchester, and they finish the week away at Tolland on the 24th.
They’re hoping to stay aggressive and improve their record while working together as a team to earn more wins.
