On this past Monday, March 9th, South Windsor High School held their last practice in the high school wrestling room as a fun conclusion to their successful season. The athletes and coaches alike relaxed by playing games, wrestling, and discussing plans for the off season.
Athletes spent some time unwinding from a long season by playing wrestle-ball (a sport that mixes basketball and wrestling) and holding some light-hearted duels with one another, making a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
The practice also gave opportunity for reflection over the season, with an overall successful season with several notable achievements such placing second in CCC’s (central Connecticut conference). This paves the way for an exciting season next winter.
“The season went really well, as we finished with a record of 17-9, had 3 state open qualifiers, a 2x state open champion, 3rd place New England placer, and 4 Conference Champions,” Head coach, Coach Michael Cunningham said.
Wrestlers both new and returning are planning their off season training and routine, with most prioritizing their strength training as well as improving their technique and conditioning. With the support of each other, the team strives to work even harder than this season.
The culture of supporting one another on the team was a highlight of the year, with athletes going the extra mile to support one another. For example, varsity athletes supporting the jv athletes at their events and athletes staying at tournaments even once they were eliminated to cheer on their teammates.
“Sharing in each other’s successes was a big part of the team, and the best part is they cultivated this themselves. Wrestling is a tough sport and creates a special bond between those who can handle it,” Coach Mike said.
In combination with further physical training and conditioning, the team can truly reach great heights due to their already strong mentality. Physical toughness has been a shortcoming for the team this year, making it a goal for next season and even the off season.
Though not number 1 in wins, South Windsor wrestling is unmatched in mentality and potential. Both athletes and coaches alike are eager to see what is in store for next season and who will fill in the shoes of the graduating seniors.
