The soft sounds of music emanating out of the SmartBoard, and the sweet smell of delicious pastries, while conversations lingered in the air. From the hustle and bustle of the hallways to the calm of the seminar room, students came together, from four different grades to be recognized, talk, eat, and enjoy their time.
On February 6th, South Windsor High School gathered eight students to recognize them for their achievements and Portrait of a Graduate attributes they were nominated by their teachers for.
Each quarter, two students are nominated by a committee from each grade for demonstrating Portrait of a Graduate attributes: engaged, socially conscious, resilient, and empowered. For the next few months, these students will have their pictures proudly displayed on the TVs in the entrance of the school.
These eight special students gathered in the Seminar room on February 6th and were treated to snacks and pastries. They received an opportunity to socialize with each other and with other students and teachers.
This is the first of several planned Portrait of a Graduate breakfasts. But why did the school decide to start doing this?
“It’s a great way to recognize students that show Portrait of a Graduate attributes across the school,” Principal LeRoy said. “Celebrating these students for making the right decisions inside of the school is a great way to promote further great actions inside of the school.”
One of the students in attendance was Killain Drummound, a freshman at SWHS.
“Staying focused on my work while being quiet and socially conscious of others,” is what led to him being recognized. His nomination described him as having outstanding compassion, empathy and leadership. Drummond would later add, “I don’t interrupt any students or teachers, because it’s not fair to the people around me.”
Overall, the students enjoyed this event. Students like Matthew Wojnilo, a sophomore in attendance, commented, “I hope that the school continues doing this, because it’s a good idea to recognize the students for their accomplishments.”
