On January 31st, Mary J. Etter Public Library hosted an interactive dinosaur artifact experience for those interested in indulging in the phenomena of the Jurassic time period. In collaboration with The Jurassic Classroom, the library provided informational lectures, hands-on activities and a curiosity driven environment for any who joined them.
Event organizer Patrick Murphy expressed his love for educating individuals about niche topics, specifically related to science. He explained that providing a scientific exploration outlet for people of all ages is crucial for developing scientific literacy.
The event’s sole purpose was “to inspire curiosity and an initiative for individuals to learn on their own,” Murphy told The Prowl.
Acting like a magnet, this attraction drew many residents to the library for a positive community experience. The sheer idea of dinosaurs was intriguing to many, appealing to all age demographics.
With the topic of dinosaurs comes controversy, mythology and skepticism making it the perfect fuel for a dynamic event. Murphy enjoyed proving the existence of dinosaurs to this group of people, by detailing specific features dinosaurs exhibit, and how they relate to their time of existence.
Fragments of dinosaur fossils with informational notes were displayed for attendees to view. Individuals educated on the display were available for questions and comments, keeping the event flowing in a conversational manner.
“I figured this could be a really fun interactive program to get people to the library,” event attendee Tori Comden told The Prowl.
The library staff was proud of the event’s turnout, commenting on its success of bringing together a diverse group of individuals. With many events held in their building throughout the year, the library goal is to be a source of inspiration and community for all.
It is evident the library successfully continued this goal by providing a Jurassic time capsule for the residents of South Windsor, sparking curiosity and scientific literacy.
