The South Windsor wrestling team edged out Avon in a thrilling dual meet on January 7th at South Windsor High School. The Bobcats walked away with a 46-38 victory, proving their resilience against a formidable opponent.
Heading into the matchup, the team was well aware of Avon’s reputation. To prepare, the Bobcats dedicated their practice sessions to high-intensity drills and strategic preparation. The hard work paid off.
“I think this was our best dual so far,” sophomore Emma Gordon said. “The whole team executed the moves we worked on in practice, and our coach was very proud of that.”
The meet was defined by early dominance, featuring several first-period pins that showcased South Windsor’s skill and confidence from the opening whistle. The Bobcats also picked up a crucial six points via a forfeit, a swing that contributed significantly to their narrow margin of victory. These early wins allowed the team to build the momentum necessary to stay ahead.
Senior captain Holden Crane played a pivotal role in the win, providing both technical skill on the mat and vocal leadership from the sidelines. “I think the team performed well overall and we had a lot of good matches,” Crane noted. “It shows a lot of good things to come.”
The win adds to an already impressive season for the Bobcats, who recently took three out of four matches in a dual meet on January 3rd. That success extended to the Junior Varsity level as well, with the JV squad delivering impressive performances against a tough Avon lineup.
Despite the celebration, the team remains focused on the long game. Junior Jake Kasek is already looking toward the postseason.
”My goals for the rest of the season are to keep winning and climbing the state rankings,” Kasek said.
With momentum on their side, the Bobcats will look to carry this energy into their next competition at Berlin High School on Saturday, January 10, as they continue their pursuit of a standout season.
