On December 17th through the 23rd, students, staff and teachers at the South Windsor High School participated in the school’s annual holiday spirit week. Hallways and classes were loaded with holiday costumes and endless cheer.
The South Windsor Student Council organized and arranged this yearly tradition as a send off before the holiday break. The members of the student council executive board and advisor Mrs. Stewart, curated 5 different unique themes for all members of the school to base their outfit off of.
President of student council, Eliza Blanchfield was a major contributor to the themes picked out for the week.
“The most important aspect of determining what spirit weeks we select is making sure they are accessible and appealing to a large portion of the student body. Our goal is to encourage school spirit as much as possible, which requires student and staff engagement,” Blanchfield told The Prowl.
Prior to spirit week, members of the Student Council club worked together to design creative posters to be hung around classes, informing the school about the date, spirit, and recommended accessories. The posters were developed with bright colors and significant drawings to influence and notify the school, and encourage students and staff to participate.
The first day of this event was held on December 17th, Winter Wonderland day. This day had students and teachers covered head to toe with the most common holiday colors. Waves of blue, grey and white passed through the hallways.
One December 18th, the school participated in Ski Lodge Thursday. This theme got students coming in with snow hats, ski goggles, puffer jackets, ear muffs. This theme turned the school from a schoolhouse to a cozy, winter ski tavern.
“I loved participating in Ski Lodge Thursday! I thought it was a really creative spirit day, and different from the themes Student Council has done in the past. I wore my snow boots, a puffer vest, and earmuffs for this theme, and I thought it was a nice way to wear something cozy but still spirited!” junior Jane Carty told The Prowl.
Friday December 19th, students took part in fleece and flannel day. Whether it was pajama pants, a cardigan or shirt, adults and teens brought out their favorite flannel pieces. Flannel, a traditionally worn print in the winter time due to its warmth and fuzzy feel created the perfect environment for the final days before break.
Two days before the long awaited break, the spirit that took place was holiday character day. The grinch, reindeers, Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves were all roaming the halls of South Windsor High School. Students wore hats and outfits to depict their holiday persona of choice.
The final day before the sendoff of the school’s nearly two week holiday break, students, staff and administrative team wore their comfiest pajamas in participation in Polar Express day. This was one of the most engaged themes as everyone wanted a chance to wear their most fuzzy, comfortable sleepwear.
This week was a huge success for the Student Council Club and the school as a whole bringing together a community of joy, fun outfits, and holiday cheer for the holidays. The participation of this week continues to increase every year, making this tradition one that students and staff continue to look forward to.
