Connor Hall, a freshman at South Windsor High School, has already made a big impression in the world of student journalism. His article, “South Windsor has a ‘“Bear”y Serious Problem,” earned him a prestigious Best of SNO award, recognizing his talent and dedication as a writer. The award highlights outstanding work from student journalists across the country, and winning it as a freshman is a rare achievement.
“Best of SNO is an extremely difficult contest to win,” Journalism teacher Mrs. Quinn said. “This year, 5,815 articles have been submitted, and only 742 have been selected. With over 100 articles submitted every single day, there are over 485 schools across the world that participate in this contest. Even on their website they acknowledge that it is an extremely challenging contest. They never tell you why an article was rejected.”
When asked what inspired him to write the article, Connor explained, “I wanted to shed light on the local bear sightings in a way that was both informative and engaging for the community.” His piece explored the unexpected bear activity in the area, combining research, interviews, and a touch of humor to make the story both educational and entertaining.
Connor said the process of writing the article was challenging but rewarding. He spent hours gathering information, checking facts, and carefully crafting each paragraph to capture the reader’s attention.
“It felt amazing to see my ideas come together in a story that people enjoyed reading,” he said.
Winning the award as a freshman was an exciting moment for Connor.
“It’s amazing to be recognized for something I enjoy so much,” he said. “I never expected to earn this kind of honor so early in my high school career.” The recognition has not only boosted his confidence but has also inspired him to continue exploring stories in his community.
Connor also shared some advice for other students interested in writing.
“Don’t be afraid to share your ideas. Be curious and passionate, that’s what makes writing stand out.”
His words reflect a mindset that values creativity, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks, qualities that will likely serve him well in both journalism and life.
Looking ahead, Connor hopes to continue contributing to the school newspaper and exploring a variety of topics. With such an impressive start, it’s clear that he is a rising star in student journalism. His award-winning work is a testament to what dedication, creativity, and a fresh perspective can achieve, and it’s only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey.
