With the chilly season here, feasting on certain dishes is especially relevant. South Windsor High School’s Food Preparation and Principles of Baking electives had a feast for this.
The team of students had been preparing the feast for days upon days. They used skills mastered in class to prepare the meal. Walking in, I had high expectations. I had seen pictures and heard stories of the cuisine.
I walked in with high-hopes and an empty stomach. The aroma of the food hit my nose as soon as I walked into the class. An assortment of Thanksgiving dishes covered the room, such as turkey and pie.
The turkey was very tasty. It was not too sweet but not too salty. I cleaned it off my plate quickly and it was very good. Five stars honestly; I thought I was in a restaurant.
“Our hard work really paid off, I felt good with all we accomplished, and the food was delicious,” Senior Elizabeth Sinclair, who takes principles of baking, said.
I did not think that anything could top that, or even level with it. Then came the dessert. The number of pies was extraordinary. More than I had ever seen. I picked up two. The pecan and apple pie. They were made to perfection.
From the filling to the crust, it was built like no other. They had somehow managed to cumulate this balance of sweet and savory. As if never there, it was soon gone, lost to my mouth.
“The food was really amazing, and it was fun getting to prepare an entire meal,” Senior principles of baking student Andrew Sasanairaine said.
“It’s really nice to see them sit down together after putting in hours worth of work preparing all the foods,” Culinary teacher Alyssa Sullivan [Chef Sullivan] said.
In all, the food was spectacular. The students’ hard work had paid off thoroughly. It was an incredible experience for me and I am super grateful for the opportunity. The Food Prep and Principles of Baking are spectacular classes and my recommendation to anyone who is interested, take the class, and enrich your culinary experience.
