Senior Sophia Gordon is one of the top wrestlers in all of New England and she looks to continue her strong performance on the mat into her senior season. Over the summer, she worked hard to maintain her skill and strength by staying active and practicing. Gordon joined the CT nationals team and went to Fargo, North Dakota to compete at nationals as the varsity 99lb wrestler.
“I would attend practices that ranged from 2 to 6 hours of just wrestling and then would either go on long runs with sprint intervals or would hit the gym for a lift,” Gordon said. Her success this season will reflect her hard work.
After training hard everyday with the best girl wrestlers in the country, she finally reached her peak shape. Gordon’s strength is incomparable and opponents are fearful of matching up against her.

Last high school season, Gordon had a record of 16-1. She was undefeated in the girls division until her New England finals match, which she looks to compete in again this year. Connecticut has a lot of competitive wrestlers so maintaining a record like that is no easy feat.
For the upcoming season, Gordon looks forward to continuing her success by building her skills both on and off the mat.
“I also want to be more competitive in the guys division which is hard as a girl because we have a natural disadvantage anatomy wise but with hard training I think I can keep up,” Gordon stated.
Now being a senior, Gordon has the most experience and looks to support and lead her team.
She highlighted a new beginning for her and the South Windsor wrestling team.
“Me and the other returning members get the opportunity to start a new era of South Windsor wrestling and build a team we are proud of and leave the program off at a good place when we leave the school,” Gordon said.
Gordon looks to meet all her goals for this season by going undefeated again in the girls league, and leave the program in a better place then it was when she started.
