South Windsor High School’s new club Model Congress was recently initiated by students Kaitlyn Roy, Kashish Kodnaney, Briana Nkrumah, and Pihu Karkee this November. As of 2025, SWHS has roughly 90 clubs, from cultural groups to competitive teams, so what makes this new edition stand out so much?
Model Congress is a student-led simulation of the U.S House of Representatives and Senate, similar to Model UN and Mock Trial, two extremely popular clubs. Model Congress focuses on drafting and proposing bills, and teaching students how to adapt and analyze current political environments.
“I would personally recommend joining this club if you are really interested in history, government, or if you want to help increase your…political efficacy and your civic engagement,” president of Model Congress, Kaitlyn Roy said.
The club includes varied leadership positions for both the House and Senate simulations. The club leaders have designated 6 potential leadership positions: House Majority Leader, Senate President, Speaker of the House Pro-Tempore, Senate President Pro-Tempore, House Clerk and Senate Clerk. There are also other opportunities to be part of special committees or work on the official website. All other members will be responsible for drafting and proposing bills on a regular basis.
The initiation of the club appeared to be an immediate success, as 90 interested students joined the Google Classroom only a few days after the announcement of the club. The club also showed a surprisingly strong interest from freshmen, who had a presentation on the club during Bobcat Block.
The Prowl asked Sahasraprithi Suriyakumarr, sophomore and new club member, why they chose to join Model Congress.
“Because I want to go into…government and law,” Suriyakumarr told The Prowl. Many students at the meeting echoed interest in similar careers.
The first meeting occurred on November 20, where dozens of eager students listened to the hour-long presentation in the library media center. During the meeting, the four club leaders discussed the club’s purpose, leadership elections, how to write bills, and future meetings.
“Participants will get the chance to talk about so many different things,” Roy said. “It’ll honestly…expand your connections too.”
Model Congress now joins the roster of SWHS clubs, a clear outlet for students interested in law, history, and government.
