The South Windsor High School football team continued its beloved tradition of generosity this year through its annual Turkey Drive. The team has been hosting this fundraiser for the past eleven years and have raised over $50,000 during that time. This tradition of giving back to the community teaches the students responsibility, teamwork, and gratitude and has become one of the most meaningful events that they do in the season.
“I really like seeing us come together. What we do and raise money for is very important and I enjoy helping out,” senior Hayden Cotto said.
For the drive, four seniors went to grocery stores to pick up the turkeys or gift cards (which then the food pantries can provide their own) with the money they raised to donate to the local food pantries: Hockum Valley and South Windsor’s Food Pantry. These donations can come from families, friends, players, and staff members.
“The faculty and the players’ families give so much,” Coach Mabey said. “I appreciate what everyone has given this year” He and Coach Hodge emphasized on how the drive strengthens the team.
“The turkey drive has been super rewarding and a great experience for our seniors to give back to others,” Coach Hodge expressed.
Doing this fundraiser allows players to see the direct impact of their work, both on the field and in the lives of families who rely on their support. Many of the players have found that what they did gave them a sense of accomplishment and valuable lessons.
Not only were Coach Mabey and Coach Hodge super impressed with their teams efforts, but the whole town is, with celebratory and appreciative messages on The South Windsor Message Board posted via Facebook.
The Turkey Drive raised $4,000 dollars in donations this year which will help approximately 200 families in the South Windsor and Vernon area, ensuring many households can enjoy a meaningful and comforting holiday meal.
The football team will continue building on this tradition in future years. They hope to find new ways to involve local businesses, the community, staff organizations, and students. Each year, the Turkey Drive reminds people that even small contributions can have a big impact and that working together for a mutual goal strengthens both the team and the town.
Thank you South Windsor football team, Coach Mabey and Coach Hodge, and everyone who donates because now someone has food on their table making the holiday that much brighter.
