The stage was set for South Windsor High School putting on the spectacular performance on Nov. 13th – Nov. 15th for a new musical, Once Upon a Mattress. This musical is a comedy with a touch of fantasy added to the mix.
The story of Once Upon a Mattress was set many moons ago, in a far away place, when a queen declared no couples would get married until her son, the prince, found a wife befitting to him.
The musical features a cast of 23 talented students. From lead roles to ensemble parts, these students have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the school year to bring this production to life. They hope to create an entertaining and memorable experience for their viewers.
“I am playing Winnifred the Woebegone! I prepare for the show by putting my lines into a quizlet and rehearsing them every night before bed! Additionally, I also try to practice my dances and songs every other day so I can do them in my sleep,” the lead role, Claire Correale, told the Prowl.
“This production has helped me grow as a performer by helping me grow my skills with more physical comedy. I also took up the costuming for a lot of the show so I learned a lot about the backstage aspect of costuming a show!” Claire Correale said.
While the cast takes the spotlight on stage, the backstage crew works tirelessly to make the play happen. From managing lighting and sound, to painting sets, these students play a crucial role in bringing the show to life. Their hard work ensures a smooth production.
A guest who attended the play said the actors “had such good voices, it was amazing to watch! I also loved the costumes. I wish I were the one wearing them” seems like they really enjoyed the show!
With the play coming to a close students begin preparing for a newer and bigger project!
