Numerous Honors Societies Hold Induction Ceremonies at South Windsor High School

On the evening of November 19th, 2025, South Windsor High School inducted members of five honors societies, the first event of its kind to be held at the high school ever. From 6:00 to 7:00, the STEM societies of Mu Alpha Theta and the Science National Honors Society inducted new members, and from 7:15 to 8:15, the Humanities societies of the World Language Honors Societies, Rho Kappa, and the Bobcat Bards inducted new members.

Mu Alpha Theta

The evening began with the induction of Mu Alpha Theta students. Mu Alpha Theta is the Math National Honors Society at South Windsor High School, drawing its name from Greek phonemes of “m”, “a”, and “th”.

Members of Mu Alpha Theta are required to be currently taking or have previously taken a precalculus class, demonstrate impressive performance in their math subjects, and show an overall interest in math.

Cara Singer, the advisor of Mu Alpha Theta, is optimistic about the new inductees this year.

“I am very excited about this year's group of inductees. They seem like strong mathematicians and have hit the ground running with ideas in our honors society,” Singer said.

Singer is not the only one excited about Mu Alpha Theta this year, as new inductee and South Windsor High School junior Samantha Kozikowski shares a similar sentiment.

“It's a really great experience to be able to connect with other like-minded and intelligent individuals and it's a great opportunity to give back to our community,” Kozikowski said.

Giving back to the community is part of the vision for the future of Mu Alpha Theta, as they plan to continue serving the elementary and middle schools through volunteering with their math events. They also hope to have more events at the high school itself.

All of these plans for the future involve the new inductees of the organization, which are sure to offer great contributions and add to the accomplishments of the society as the year progresses.

Science National Honors Society

The second portion of the STEM induction ceremony was the Science National Honors Society. Students in the Science National Honors Society have demonstrated a high level of performance in an advanced science course while showing an appreciation for the subject of science in general.

Similar to Mu Alpha Theta, this year’s inductees show great promise and set up high hopes for the growth of the Science National Honors Society.

“I’m excited because it’s been the most inductees we’ve had for the three years that we have been an honors society,” science teacher and Science National Honors Society advisor April Davis said.

Inductees are excited to contribute to the society, while also demonstrating their love for science in the process.

“I feel honored to be a part of the society and I feel like it is my duty now to help more people learn science and spread scientific literacy,” junior and Science National Honors Society inductee Muhammad Bilal said.

The primary goal for the society this year is to collaborate further with the elementary and middle schools, as well as establishing the society further within the high school. The society aims to increase scientific literacy and appreciation across various age groups and demographics.

“New students are growing our presence in our school community, and I don’t just mean within the high school, I also mean within the elementary and middle schools,” Davis said.

With a mix of scientific passion and impressive growth, the Science National Honors Society has a bright year ahead of them.

World Language Honors Societies

The humanities induction ceremony began at 7:15, and with it began the induction for new members of World Language Honors Societies. French, Spanish, and Italian Honors Societies all inducted members in that respective order.

To officially become a member, inductees had to recite a pledge, each spoken in the language of the society they were joining. After each pledge was finished, the societies formally welcomed students into their organizations.

Italian National Honors Society advisor Mia Zaccardelli shared her thoughts on the new inductees this year.

“They're very good students and I think the common thread among all of them is that they're hard workers,” Zaccardelli told The Prowl.

Joining one of the three world language societies signifies a proficiency in foreign languages, and becoming part of the societies allows students to further that proficiency and work towards fluency.

Junior Shriniketh Deepa Senthil Kumar, an inductee of the French National Honors Society, is enthusiastic about his future with the organization.

“I think it's a great community to be a part of, and I'm really looking forward to the new experiences that come along with it. I've always wanted to expand my knowledge on French learning, so I think this would be a good way for me to involve myself more with the language itself,” Kumar said.

Following the induction of new members, these honors societies are poised to do great things as the year progresses.

Rho Kappa

The second portion of the humanities induction ceremony was the induction of Rho Kappa members. The name “Rho Kappa” is of Semitic origin, meaning head and palm of hand, or the idea that with knowledge should come service.

This ceremony began with a candlelighting, each candle representing a core value of the society: veritas, or truth; scientia, or knowledge; sapienta, or wisdom; and officium, or service.

Mr. Garrish, one of the advisors of the society, looks forward to getting the new inductees involved in several ways.

“[One way] is service opportunities in which students volunteer to fulfill various needs. For example, we have a big thing coming up next year, the 250th anniversary of America's independence, and so students will be making lesson plans, helping to celebrate, or hosting events. We also have History Day, which serves as our outlet for the scholarship part,” Garrish told The Prowl.

The new inductees are glad that their efforts have reimbursed them as they eagerly await opportunities to become involved with the program. Two inductees that harbor this sentiment are juniors Emery Forko and Disha Hosamani.

“I’m excited, and I’m happy that my grades and work have paid off in some way,” Forko said.

“Joining Rho Kappa was exciting and the induction went very well. I’m looking forward to being a part of this honor society,” Hosamani said.

The new inductees will look to make an impact within the society as the year progresses, bringing fresh and exciting perspectives along the way.

Bobcat Bards

The final portion of the humanities induction ceremony, and the ceremony night overall, was the induction of new members to the Bobcat Bards, the English National Honors Society at South Windsor High School.

To become a member of this society, students must have displayed exemplary performances in their English classes, and have a passion for the subject overall.

An advisor for the society, Amanda Kelsey, shared how the organization came to be.

“In the spring of 2023, a group of English teachers came together with the goal of starting a National English Honors Society chapter at SWHS,” Kelsey said.

The name “Bobcat Bards” pairs the school mascot, bobcats, with “bard,” a term for storytellers and poets. Kelsey also elaborated on the society’s vision for the future.

“Moving forward, our plan is to continue building a strong, student-driven organization. We’ll be electing our leadership team and launching committees that will take on projects, service initiatives, and school-wide literacy events,” Kelsey commented.

New inductees of the society are ecstatic about these opportunities to further enrich themselves in the subject of English, one of whom is junior Thomas Melia.

“It's a cool opportunity and I’m looking forward to participating,” Melia shared.

The future appears bright for the Bobcat Bards, as they are poised to do great things this school year with the addition of their new inductees.

Dhu’l-Kifl Ramirez is a junior at South Windsor High School who is in his second year at The Bobcat Prowl, currently serving as a regular editor. An individual with a passion for writing, he is excited to continue to offer his contributions to the high school’s award-winning newspaper. Outside of school, Ramirez is an avid basketball fan and enjoys watching the NBA, especially his favorite team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his free time, he can typically be found spending time with friends, family, or his four dogs. In the future, he hopes to pursue a career in biology.

Adam Gadit, Staff Writer

Adam Gadit is a Junior at South Windsor High School and is in his second year at the Bobcat Prowl. Gadit is a member of the Islamic Cultural Club, HOPE Club, and the South Windsor Fire Explorer Post. Gadit spends his time outside of school working out and plans to pursue a college education in dentistry after high school.
