Located on Sullivan Ave in South Windsor, The Tyler Regional Animal Care shelter’s main goal is reuniting animals with their owners. 

Officer Brian Kelley devotes his time to looking after the animals in extension to his duties as a police officer. 

The Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter operates as a unit of the police department, so volunteers are often officers that serve the town of South Windsor. Currently, there are about eleven dogs and three cats who call the shelter their temporary home. 

One of the residents, Jenna, is a young husky with endless amounts of energy. The shelter estimated her to be about two years old. Although ages are never exact. Jenna was found roaming the streets of East Hartford, and was picked up by animal control and brought to the shelter on September 3rd. Unfortunately, she has been in the shelter ever since, eagerly awaiting adoption. 

Periwinkle was found as yet another stray. She has lived at the shelter for a few months now, and it is unknown how old she is. 

The shelter is spacious with a fenced in yard in the back for the animals to play. There are also a variety of toys to keep the dogs entertained. The animals at the shelter are well cared for. They are walked, fed, and played with by shelter volunteers. Occasionally they see visitors when people come with an interest to adopt.

The cats are kept in a separate area away from the dogs to have their own space. 

On the downside, due to insufficient funds, the shelter is unable to provide veterinary care unless absolutely necessary. Meaning animals are only taken to the vet if there is probable cause of an issue and not for regular check ups. That is why it is important that dogs are adopted as soon as possible. In order to ensure that they receive the proper care they need. 

In addition to this, many dogs come in as neglect issues with severe trauma. In order to prevent further trauma to the animals the shelter ensures that owners are a good fit for the animals before they are taken home. This also prevents animals from having to return to the shelter. 

Hopefully all these animals are able to find forever homes that will love them unconditionally.
