Halloween is an exciting time of the year where people celebrate in lots of different ways, the most commonly known tradition being dressing up. Here at South Windsor High School staff have the opportunity to dress up as well, with the math department in particular known for going all out.
The math department goes above and beyond with their costumes. They look forward to this opportunity to dress up every year, and even talk about the theme months in advance.
“It’s one of the first things we talk about when we get together before the school year,” Mrs. Correale told The Prowl
This year they chose the theme of Monopoly. Everyone was their own character or made their own groups depending on their costumes, such as a cop and prisoner, following the theme.
Alongside the Math department, the English department took advantage of the chance to wear fun costumes with the theme this year being storybook characters. Some examples of their costumes consisted of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Willy Wonka, and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
Though it is not an official contest, both departments get very competitive about who did it better. In particular, math teacher Mrs. Goslin is very passionate about the effort and involvement of this unofficial competition. She emphasizes the importance of the Math department’s costume performance this year specifically.
“We have a lot of people involved and we are going all out as we usually do this year. There is a lot that goes into it and I think it’s one of the more creative ones we’ve done the past few years,” Goslin told The Prowl.
Staff from the Math and English departments have hopes that, for future Halloweens, other departments will participate in dressing up and possibly make it into somewhat of a competition.
“I think it would be more fun to increase the competition. We need more competition around here. We can’t just have us and English doing something,” Goslin said.
There are high hopes that next year there will be more participation from other staff around the building. It would be a fun incorporation to school spirit and could be a great new halloween tradition.
