On the evening of November 6th, 2025, South Windsor High School hosted its annual Rising Freshman Night. The event is designed to give middle school students the opportunity to explore clubs, honors societies, sports, and other activities they could experience as a high school student, allowing them to begin planning how they want to spend their valuable years as a South Windsor High School student.
The night also gives parents insight on opportunities for their child throughout their high school career.
“This is a lively event where the vast majority of the South Windsor High School community comes out to showcase how amazing our school is,” school counseling curriculum specialist Benjamin Wry told The Prowl.
Many current high school students were present to showcase some of the over 90 clubs currently offered by the high school. A variety of athletic team representatives were also there to demonstrate the diverse athletic options. A highlight of the event was the pep band who welcomed the visitors in the lobby.
Student representatives from clubs, honors societies, and sports teams had tables with trifold posters and other pieces of important information for parents and students alike to explore and ask questions about.
Aside from clubs and activities, students had the opportunity to meet counselors and staff that will assist them in planning for their career paths after high school.
“The high school does a great job of creating a welcoming and informative environment. By connecting students early with teachers, counselors, and student leaders, they help make the transition smoother and less intimidating,” associate principal at Timothy Edward Middle School, Frank Leon said. “It’s always a great turnout and an important part of preparing for a successful start at South Windsor High School.”
The high school was excited to welcome a few hundred attendees, approximately 300 to 400 people in total. The night included introductory slides and talks highlighting key supports, important people and places and graduation requirements.
The evening wrapped up with a facility tour and a fun scavenger hunt featuring prizes. The goal was for these rising freshmen to leave excited, supported, and ready for what’s next.
“The main goal of rising freshman night is to support students and families in their transition to high school in order to help them dream, achieve and inspire and make an impact on their school and the South Windsor community,” South Windsor High School Principal Mr. Leroy, said.
The school year goes by fast, and is especially overwhelming for rising Freshman who are still acclimating to the high school environment. By giving middle schools students these opportunities, it allows them to get a head start on planning for their future after high school, taking full advantage of the short but valuable high school years.
