On Friday, February 7th 2025, the South Windsor for the Local Kids (SWFLK) club hosted their annual volleyball marathon fundraiser from 6-10pm in the South Windsor High School gym. All proceeds of this fundraiser go to the Nicki Cartier Dance Marathon, which raises funds for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

SWFLK was started by Nicki Cartier, because she received medical care at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and wanted to give back.. Sadly, Cartier passed away in 2023, but the club has continued to stay active and raise funds for the cause.
“I think it’s important to be involved because these proceeds save lives,” freshman SWFTLK club member Grace Daugherty said.
Students created their own teams for the marathon. 8-12 players were allowed per group, and only 3 could be actually volleyball players. It is a fun and effective way to bring different people together and also raise funds for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Ticket prices were sold at $12 and $15 dollars.

During this event, concessions were sold to participants and supporters. Food and treats were provided for those attending this event. This included pizza, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, drinks, etc.
In addition to the Volleyball Marathon itself, multiple raffles were held for all those who attended. The rewards to these various raffles include; a $100 Shake Shack gift card, a $50 New Balance gift card and a $25 Birdhouse Café gift card.
There was also a raffle entry for a student parking pass for the next school year! The fundraiser will be ongoing until the Dance Marathon that will be held in the SWHS cafeteria on 2/28. During the Dance Marathon, they will announce the winner of this raffle.
The event began at 6 p.m., allowing teams time to warm up before competing. Ten teams participated, while a crowd of supporters filled the stands to watch the marathon. Competitors gave their best effort and enjoyed the event.
“I had a great time playing with my friends and enjoying playing for a good cause even though we didn’t win,” senior Susan Otaluka said.
The marathon was an opportunity for students to come together and be involved in activities outside of school hours. The SWFTLK ended up raising about $1,300 from the support of this event.
“This event is a good opportunity for kids to come out and have fun for a good cause,” says one of the chaperones, Heath Carlson, SWHS teacher.
Even those who didn’t participate in the game, had a positive impact on the cause. SWFTLK thanks the chaperones, student participants and all those who supported!
Be part of the fun and participate in the marathon next year!
