A year ago, Olivia Lopez was sitting in the bleachers watching the girl’s soccer team fall short of Fairfield Ludlowe 1-0 in the state playoffs.
Now that former goalie Haley Butler is gone, a new goalie needed to step up for the ‘Cats to help them with the upcoming season. That person is freshman Olivia Lopez.
Lopez is a great student-athlete who has been playing soccer for 5 years. She made the transition to keeper after one year of playing soccer.
¨Olivia is one of my best friends; I’m so proud of her. She’s a great goalie. I’m happy that she gets to play on the varsity team. She works hard and she deserves it,¨ freshman Marin Cabahug stated.
Lopez is a very motivated and determined athlete and her biggest motivation is getting a scholarship for college. To help her achieve this goal, she participates in club soccer for the FSA ECNL team.
Lopez was inspired to start being a keeper because of her role model Maria Galley. Maria is a former SWHS Girls’ soccer goalkeeper who went to Xavier University, a Division 1 school in Cincinnati, Ohio.
¨Olivia is very vocal and supportive on and off the field. She is a hard worker and great teammate,” freshman, Gianna DiSalvatore told The Prowl.
Lopez is looking forward to playing Northwest Catholic because they are a challenging opponent
¨I think beating them would really set the stage for the South Windsor Girls Soccer season,¨ Lopez stated.
¨Olivia is an all-around great person on and off the field. She builds the team up and shows great confidence and leadership despite only being a freshman,¨ senior Susan Otaluka explained.
Lopez and the Lady ‘Cats have a full season ahead of them and are looking to repeat last year’s tradition of making the Connecticut state playoffs.
The next girl’s soccer game is this Friday, September 13 against Maloney at South Windsor High on the Multi-Purpose Field.
