Opening in 2015, Mexicali has been the go-to Mexican restaurant for many South Windsor residents for almost 10 years. With a fun and family-oriented atmosphere, and an impeccable cuisine, Mexicali has proven itself as a predominant part of the South Windsor community.

“I see a big connection between staff and customers, and the staff is genuinely nice and has created a great community,” a frequent customer, Cassie Rolfe, said. As a high school student who likes to visit their friends who are employed at Mexicali, she also finds that it is at a great location because it is close to South Windsor High School and located fairly centrally in the town.

Mexicali also serves as an employer to students at South Windsor High School, employing 7 students with practical after school jobs. Isabella Giammarino, a junior at South Windsor High School, has been working at Mexicali since May of 2023. She also finds that the proximity to the High School is very convenient.

“I’ve learned how to be more confident in my voice and have learned to not underestimate the power I have,” Giammarino shared as she told The Prowl how working at Mexicali has given her skills she applies to her everyday life outside of work and at school.

“It’s (Mexicali) a staple in the community so he (Roberto Rostro) likes to bring in people from the community,” one of the managers at Mexicali, David Keavney, explained.

Alongside giving opportunities to South Windsor High School students, Mexicali also takes pride in giving back to the community. Keaveny shared that owner, Roberto Rostro, sponsors events and makes donations towards schools.

Recently, Mexicali made a donation to the South Windsor High School, by supplying gift cards as prizes for a Trivia Night that took place earlier in March.

Another recent donation was a delivery of tacos to the teachers at Eli Terry elementary school to show appreciation. Also dating back to 2016, Mexicali hosted a fundraiser for a South Windsor High School faculty member’s daughter who suffered from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and donated a percent of the profits from that night and held raffles to raise money for their family.

Mexicali, located at 935 Sullivan Ave, South Windsor, CT, continues to give back to the South Windsor Community and has an ambience you can find nowhere else in South Windsor.
