South Windsor boys volleyball team at practice. Senior captains Ryan Korah and Ben Bernstein are looking forward to another great season.

Ending last season with a 12-7 record, the boys have big shoes to fill for the highly anticipated 2023 season. With head coach Ryan Mintzer-Woodcock and a varsity team of 12 members, senior Co-Captain Ryan Korah feels as though the team is excited to “start right where we left off last season with us winning, and continue to win and hopefully win a championship.”

Co-Captain Ben Bernstein has similar sentiments, hoping to make it even farther in their season than the last. Losing 6 seniors from last year’s season has been difficult for the current varsity team, however, Berstein hopes to “continue from where we left off last year, so that the players with new starting roles can step up. We had 2 great captains last year, and I hope that Ryan and I can fill their shoes to help lead the team.”

Korah emphasizes how grateful he is to be co-captain this year, but also the pressure that goes along with it. “There’s more responsibility with it. Like we’re in charge of making sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be” Korah says.

“For the team, I want us to be able to trust each other on the court. I know in past seasons we’ve been a lot more individual-based than team-based if that makes sense so I just want us to be able to think of ourselves as one holistic team and not as individuals.

Both Korah and Berstein have aspirations for a more united and synced team, “For the team, I want us to be able to trust each other on the court. I know in past seasons we’ve been a lot more individual-based than team-based if that makes sense so I just want us to be able to think of ourselves as one holistic team and not as individuals.” Korah shared.

With their first home game against Southington quickly approaching, Bernstein recognizes the challenge he and the team are up against. However, he thinks that the match will, “allow us to see if we can, as a team, overcome a height disadvantage.”

At the end of the day, “consistency” is something both Korah, Bernstein, and the rest of the team are dedicated to reflecting throughout their season.

The boy’s first home game is against Enfield High school on April 5th at 5:00 pm. Come out and show your support!
