Senior Jayshaun Barrett is an undefeated wrestling machine on the mat who has gone 14-0 to start off his season. Barrett is currently ranked in CT and it’s for a reason.
“Jayshaun has made steady improvement over the past 4 years. He started out having to endure bigger and older workout partners, but he never complained. That attitude has made him one of the best wrestlers in his weight class as a senior. Currently he is undefeated,” Coach Knapp commented.
Barrett started playing because he wanted to become a better athlete for football, but eventually his competitive side took over, and everyday he would work towards getting better.
“Jays a dawg on the mat, never seen the guy lose before and he’s also a great practice partner; he’s taught me so many things, and the guy is going places this year,” senior Jalen Canales told The Prowl.
He’s been playing for 4 years now, and, as a team, they’ve been doing well for the most part. The team is still young, but it doesn’t stop them from striving well.
Wrestling isn’t an easy sport for most, but with the help of teammates and coaches pushing and training nonstop, they manage to push themselves to the limit.
“Jay is a great teammate and wrestler, and he always helps keep everybody positive through tough practices,” senior Justin Dittmar stated.
“I want to see everyone on the team do their best, so I always try to provide critique and feedback whenever they’re in doubt or make mistakes because it’s a lot easier to give up and quit. It takes courage and bravery to push through when things aren’t going your way,” Barrett stated.
“I give credit to Knapp because he’s helped shape who I am, and he’s pushed me to my limits. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without him, and I give credit to my teammates that always kept that competitive side to push each other,” Barrett stated.
The next home meet for the ‘Cats is next Wednesday January 22nd at 6:00 against Windsor High where Barrett and the ‘Cats plan on keeping the winning streak alive.
