In February of 2023, the Islamic Culture Club was born. This club was founded to create a comfortable environment for Muslims and non-Muslims to learn about Islam, cultures, languages, and holidays. The club aims to raise awareness of the Muslim culture for Muslims and non-Muslims.

“I started the Islamic Cultural Club to promote diversity and shine a light on situations in countries that are not spoken about,” Myara Kharboush, the founder of the Islamic Culture Club, told The Prowl.

Some objectives that the club targets are, ending misconceptions about Islam, increasing diversity positively uniting both the Muslim and non-Muslim populations, and putting an end to certain common. The members of this club learn about the various languages, cultures, and foods that are prevalent in several countries within their Muslim population.

Mayara Kharboush noticed the number of Muslims in the South Windsor School District was growing. She took action immediately and visited Mr Ly, a French teacher at South Windsor High School. They agreed to create an Islamic culture club where everyone is welcome, regardless of ethnicity and religion. The Islamic Club is not an educational environment that brings representation to the Muslim community at school.

“I am motivated to be the Islamic culture club advisor because I believe in inclusion, equity and religious diversity,” the club’s adviser, Moussa Ly, told The Prowl

The Islamic Culture Club talks about various countries in the Middle East and will provide exciting activities as the club is developed. The Islamic Culture Club attended a meeting with all staff and faculty and explained what they wanted to accomplish, what they struggled with, and what successes they had as Muslim students at South Windsor High School.

Stay tuned for future developments as the Islamic Culture Club continues to grow within the school community.
