Thursday, May 25, 2023, marked the annual freshman science fair. It was held from 7:25-10:05 in the high school cafeteria and lobby. All freshmen were required to attend. The science fair gives students interested in science opportunities to learn about a topic of their choice and prepare themselves for a  presentation that is judged. This format creates an alternative for students who thrive on doing projects rather than quizzes and tests. The fair touches on environmental problems and instills good habits such as research, planning, and testing a hypothesis. It also very clearly emphasizes how our decisions affect the world around us. The most significant theme seen at the science fair this year was change and growth.

Judges included social studies teacher, Ms. Whitmore, English teacher, Mr. Webb, town council member Andrew Paterna, and former science fair participants. These individuals visited students’ tables where they had posters and other materials about their topic on display and asked students about their topic and how it related to global warming and climate change. The students were graded on their ability to talk to the judges about their topic and why their topic was important.

“I had the privilege of going to the science fair, which I thought was really cool, seeing all the students projects and how they were going to tackle world issues. It was very inspiring and incredible to see the products that were created,” said Ms. Whitmore.

Students were very responsive to the themes of change and growth seen at the science fair. Its clear that the science fair made an impact and students are eager to do their part to reduce the causes and effects of global warming and climate change to ensure a strong environment.  “There were a lot of innovative, inspirational ideas made by the students to improve the conditions of our environment,” said freshman Emani Lee.
