Senior Chris Maio may not be the tallest or biggest player on the field, but he makes his presence known, fighting hard for every ball for South Windsor varsity soccer, and he will continue to do so during states on Friday, October 31st.
Chris is the type of player who is always focused on the ball and doesn’t feel the pressure. He has taken two penalty kicks for the team against New Britain Tolland and both times he was calm and perfectly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
He has scored some big goals, one being in the CCC Quarter Finals against Wethersfield to secure the win 2-0. He currently has 11 goals, second most on the team. He’s always in the right spot at the right time. With his good technical skill he easily gets through defenders, and with his constant pressure, he forces the opposing defense to lose the ball.
“Being a varsity player has always been a big dream of mine,” Chris Maio said. “I’ve worked very hard to get here, and even though there were setbacks throughout the season I am very proud to make a big contribution to the team.”
He is a very positive person and makes sure his teammates are doing okay.
“It is a joy to have a son on the soccer team and it has been a positive experience for him,” Chris’ mom, Mrs. Maio said.
The team calls him the 6th man because he is the best and most hard working player off the bench. There is an award in the NBA called the 6th man award. It is for the most valuable player off the bench and only one player gets it a year.
“I love having a teammate like Chris,” Junior Heredia said. “He’s so supportive on and off the field and he is always picking people up making sure they’re okay.”
Chris has been playing soccer for 14 years since he was three, playing travel and club soccer until high school.
“Christopher has gained leadership skills and is working as part of a team,” Chris’ mom, Mrs. Maio said.
He plans to take his soccer career further and is looking to play in college. His love for the game hasn’t ended yet and he wants to continue playing in the future.
“Christopher is a great soccer player and watching him play is a highlight for me; I love Chris,” Mrs. Maio said.
