With a bright smile and energetic personality, science teacher April Davis captured the hearts of many students and teachers alike here at South Windsor High School, becoming the teacher of the year for the 2025-2026 school year. As a science teacher, Davis strives to cultivate  a nurturing classroom environment, in which students feel safe and empowered to learn freely.

Becoming the teacher of the year is a lengthy holistic process.

“This is not something I achieved alone. I am Teacher of the Year because of the people around me: my students, my colleagues, and family,” Davis told the Prowl. “I want my students to feel seen, heard, and valued, whether they are in my science class, preparing for a club event, or just checking in with me.  My goal is to create a space where students feel like they belong and are comfortable.”

An active member in the school community, Davis teaches Physical Science and Astronomy. She advises the Black Student Alliance and Science National Honor Society, while co-advising the Science Bowl with Mrs. Tebbetts.

In college she studied geology and secondary education. During these years, Davis realized her passion for education and raising minority voices early on.

“I realized that my impact, specifically as it relates to Women in STEM and minorities in STEM, would be greater if I was able to inspire young students to pursue STEM careers,” Davis said. “I hope that I can be a source of inspiration for all of my students to enjoy science and potentially have a career in STEM.”

Davis offers advice for every high school student.

“Always be open to learning new things or trying something a different way,” Davis said.

For struggling students, Davis provides helpful insight.

“The path that you take to reach your goals will not be without twists and turns, so enjoy the small moments and be ready to adapt when things don’t go your way,” Davis said.

Her last words of advice for students in their lives is to “Set boundaries, have balance, and have fun!”

Students who had Mrs. Davis frequently recall their time with her as a rewarding and uplifting experience.

“Whether it was on school work or otherwise, Mrs. Davis always had a way of making sure you were ok,” Maeve Verzella said. “She made education something fun for students, while creating a comfortable environment for all.”
