With the South Windsor High School’s girls’ lacrosse season set to begin on March 22, players are eager to take the field and make their mark.
Tryouts are at the end of March and players are ready to go.
The team did exceptionally well last season as they won 7 out of 12 games and made it to the playoffs. As for the playoffs, the Bobcats won one game against Tolland with a score of 12-5, but they ended up losing to Farmington 5-13 before the quarter finals.
The team has time to predict what might be most challenging about the season. They are worried about playing Ellington again, as last season they took the loss against them. Ellington’s aggressive defense shut SWHS’ offense out, preventing them from scoring any goals.
Additionally, the team is interested to see how they fare against Avon this season. Avon had a pretty good record last year, beating Glastonbury 12-8. The Bobcats are interested to see how well they fare against Avon this coming season.
Erin Fang, sophomore on the team, is looking forward to the new season and the opportunity to play with others, especially other sophomores. Even though varsity did very well last season as they made it to the playoffs, JV did not win many games last year as there were mostly beginner players.
“The coach is going to evaluate everyone’s skill level and organize us into varsity and junior varsity,” Fang said. “Then we continue on with practices like normal, skill building and stuff.”
During tryouts there will be no cuts but coaches will assess players to determine what team a player is placed on. They will go through a few drills and exercises including a one-mile run, which they will be expected to complete in 12 minutes.
New to the team this year is assistant coach Michelle Taveres. She is a substitute at SWHS and will be helping out Coach Laporte. The girls lacrosse team is still looking for a JV coach. Coach Michelle has talked about possibly being the JV coach if there is no coach before the season starts.
“l would say I’m excited because this is my first time working for the lacrosse program, especially in a coaching position, so I’ve met a lot of the girls from being around the building,” Taveres told The Prowl. “I’m excited to see them in an athletic environment.
Taveres hasn’t played lacrosse before, but did used to be a part of the soccer program at SWHS. She wanted to try something new this season, and is ready to step into the position of assistant coach.
There will be a practice scrimmage against Avon, East Lyme, and RHAM on March 29th, then games will begin on April 7th.
