A close look at SWHS’s girls varsity basketball captains

Kaitlyn Bullock

Although soft spoken, Senior Kaitlyn Bullock’s actions speak louder than words. Her position as the center holds the offensive together and allows them to compete against the opponent’s taller players. “I would say my main role is to just support the team and help out when others are lost.” Bullock told the prowl. Her unselfishness lets the rest of the players on the team grow their skills during games. Now in her fourth and final season, Bullock hopes to keep her senior season going on as long as possible and continue being successful each game.

Senior Angie Santiago has consistently been a standout player on the South Windsor Girl Basketball team. Last year she was one of two players from the team to be granted All-Conference. Santiago is mostly known for her impeccable three point shooting which has been an important asset to the team. Santiago stated that her role is to “to be a leader on and off the court and bring energy every game to help motivate the team.” Her passion and determination positively impacts the team and serves as a role model for all the players. Despite her amazing individual performance, Santiago is a firm believer of teamwork. “Basketball is all about working together as a team and I will continue to communicate that to the team.”

Senior Lauren Graham is the third Senior Captain of the team. Her words of encouragement are always full of care and are able to lift up the team’s spirits. “As captain I make sure to be super encouraging to everyone on the team and constantly keep up the energy.” Graham stated. She supports every player, making them feel welcomed into the girls basketball program. Whether they play for JV or Varsity, Graham creates an environment where both teams can be united. One goal Graham has for the team is “that each player on the team is able to walk away from this season proud of themselves and the work they put in no matter where we end up.

Erin Martin

Erin Martin is the only junior among the captains. Despite her younger status, her experience and basketball expertise is apparent on the court. As the team’s starting point guard, Martin holds the responsibility of facilitating the offensive plays that are run during the game. Off the court, she is a very approachable upperclassman. When asked what type of environment she wants for the team, Martin replied, “my goal is for the underclassman to be comfortable with us and feel like they can talk to us about anything. Hopefully this team chemistry can translate onto the court and make us more successful.”
