Priest Farms, located at 1407 Sullivan Avenue is a South Windsor community owned farmhouse occupying 72.56 acres of land. The farm is taken care of by a committee that is currently working on preserving the land and the farmhouse.
The Town of South Windsor owns Priest Farms. Ultimately the Town of South Windsor decided they would split this property.
“The town owns the property but leases it to different farmers every couple of years. It depends who bids on the farm, not any specific crop, just a farmer who would lease the land, as a result, he doesn’t know where the pumpkins are going or if they are in business or anything,” said counselor Andrew Paterna.
The farm was originally going to settle at the fairground in South Windsor, which is where the Wapping Fair is annually held. Thankfully it was agreed upon that Priest Farms would be located on Sullivan Ave.
The location becomes more prominent during this time of year, specifically fall, when pumpkin picking and visiting farms with family is most relevant.
Although the pumpkin patch is there in the middle of South Windsor for everyone to see as they drive by on Sullivan, it doesn’t mean the pumpkins are for picking.
The sea of orange in a field of green is a sight that all can appreciate as they drive by, absorbing it’s unique beauty. Many residents of South Windsor enjoy the scenery as they pass by the farm in their daily lives.
When locals drive past Priest Farms on Sullivan and the old historical home on the farm they’re not just visiting, they are also supporting local agriculture and fostering a sense of community spirit in South Windsor.
