South Windsor Democrat, Steven King Jr. is running for 2024 State Representative. After contemplating the choice to run, King drew his inspiration from former Town Council member, Erica Evans, who heavily encouraged his candidacy.
King is motivated to create change within the South Windsor community. Due to his 10+ years of experience coaching South Windsor soccer, King has seen various financial circumstances that he hopes to change. Many families struggled to find the funds for their children to play soccer, which King believes should not be an issue.
If elected to the position of State Representative, King will work to improve the quality of living within South Windsor, particularly for families. King recognizes the impact COVID-19 has left on much of the Connecticut population. He therefore wishes to provide additional options for financial assistance that are more accessible to the average citizen, including free breakfast and lunch for all children in the school system.
King focuses heavily on the issue of mental health and feels that there is a stigma associated with asking for help, specifically within youth. He explains how detrimental this stigma can be, as it can cause major mental health issues, leading to shame and even substance abuse.
“We have to take away the stigma, it’s okay to ask for help,” King told The Prowl.
King believes the best place to start is within the school systems of Connecticut, by normalizing asking for help, and providing additional resources for those who may be struggling. King hopes to implement achievable standards for the youth in and out of school.
When asked about his values, King tells The Prowl, “while I may not personally agree with someone’s actions, in the end it is not our place to judge them.
We can never understand what a person is going through, until we place ourselves in their shoes.”
King recognizes his flaws, noting that while he is not perfect, he has South Windsor’s best interest at heart. “One South Windsor” is King’s most recognized slogan. He has a vision of a strong community, that he would be honored to represent at the state level.
