As summer break comes to a close, South Windsor High School’s sports teams prepare for their upcoming season. During the summer, sports teams enter their preseason, which aims to sharpen the athlete’s skills for the new season. As the preseason wraps up, the Bobcat Girls Swim Team is back in action and ready for their new season, with not only new members but new coaches.
Last season, the girls were coached by Laura McLaughlin, and had a successful season. The team had won various meets and had numerous swimmers win 1st place at the CCC tournament. They also made it to the State tournament for the first time in years.
This season, the team will be coached by head coach, Heather Vendetta and assistant coach, Sherry McCullough. The girls have high hopes for these new coaches and what they can do for the team.
“I’m hoping that new coaches can keep our team dynamic going and give us the opportunity to bond outside of practice,” said junior Audrey Zhang.
Zhang has been on the swim team since her freshman year and has seen the team go through both highs and lows. Zhang was one of the girls who got to compete in states last season due to her exceptional times and meeting many other requirements. This season, Zhang is excited to see what the new coaches and members can bring to the team.
“Having new coaches and new members is a good thing for the team because it gives us a new perspective on something that’s been the same for so many years,” Zhang told The Prowl.
However, it is not just the coaches who bring a winning season to the team. The girls will have to put in the work, bond as a team, and have team goals to have a successful season.
“I’m hoping that as a team, we can all be friendly and have a team that I felt we had last year, especially now that we have so many freshmen and not a lot of seniors,” commented sophomore Rayna Reed.
As the season approaches fast, the team is looking forward to seeing what the future holds for them, and what awaits them as they enter this new era.
