SNHS stands for science national honors society, and is the newest honors society to find a home at South Windsor High School. The organization is for high interest students in science who both excel in the classroom and can solve real world problems.
The advisor for this new society is Mrs. Davis, a long-time science teacher at the high school. “This is an honors society, and so it’s a society for science. You have to have an overall good GPA, at least 3.5 in all science upper level courses. This idea was brought to me by two students recommending a Science National Honors Society. They felt the need to have a society because we do extremely well in our societies for science so we wanted to honor that,” explained Davis.
The two students actually recommended this society so they could feel more secure in this environment, as well as surround themselves with like-minded students.
Sophomore Samarth Basanth was one of the students who recommended the creation of this society. “Beyond acknowledging academic excellence, Science National Honor Society is dedicated to cultivating a community where a passion for science propels meaningful contributions to society. The recent induction ceremony showcased the commitment of our members. I’m confident that the Science National Honor Society will not only serve as a marker of achievement but also contribute to the ongoing scientific prowess of our members, shaping them into aspiring scientists and leaders dedicated to making a positive impact,” said Basanth.
Basanth also explained that this community is one that shows collaboration and being confident in each other so they can achieve their goals together, as the scientist community that they are.
The other student who recommended the society was sophomore Srinidhi Karthik. “Science national honors society are people who have a higher grade and stand out from others. They are put into a community where they can thrive and there’s many opportunities for people in the science national honors society,” said Karthik.
Karthik would recommend this new society because she wants to bring more people into it.
“That’s what makes a scientific community very strong, using our scientific knowledge to apply to real world solutions. I would totally recommend trying out science. It’s an exceptional opportunity for others,¨ said Karthik.
All of its members are open and welcoming to any student who aspires to grow in the field of science. Although young, the society is already strong and continues to grow rapidly, so everyone who has the academic standing and takes higher level science classes, are welcome to apply and join.
