Led by student tutors, and under the supervision of English teachers, The Writing Center Club’s goal is to help students improve their writing skills in a comfortable and supportive environment. The club was started by Ms. Howard a few years ago, but was placed on hold during the pandemic. It has once again opened its doors for students who seek help with their school work and personal writing.
Open every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2-3 pm in room 136, students can show without an appointment and at any point in their writing process to meet with a tutor.
The Writing Center is an amazing opportunity for people to not only improve their writing but also for people who are more advanced and would like to get their work published and maybe pursue a future in the field of writing.
Students can pursue having their work published in many places such as South Windsor High School’s literary magazine, The Mind’s eye, which is a compilation of literature and art, or outside of South Windsor through the Connecticut Student Writers Magazine, writing contest run through UConn, as well as many other places.
“The writing center is a good opportunity for all students who come to get help. Often [they] find that just by talking about their writing, they figure out what they want to change in order to improve it,” said the founder of the center, Ms. Howard.
The center is also a good opportunity for the tutors. “The tutors who work with [students] find great opportunity to show leadership skills, and they end up improving their own writing skills. So, both students walk away as better writers, which is a good thing for our school culture to build a writing culture at our school,” said Howard.
