Cheer tryouts have been underway since the beginning of November as the group is preparing for upcoming competitions.

Throughout the beginning of November, a handful of girls set out trying to make the competition team. As tryouts dropped, everyone’s anticipation for the cheerleading competitions coming up in the future steadily built.

Cheer competition is a delicate mix of dance, partner stunts, pyramids, baskets, tumbling, cheer, and jumps. At these competitions, groups get scored in every category based on cleanliness, volume, stunt landing, difficulty, and the crowd’s interaction.

Coach Jessica Slater was thinking about adding people to the team and picking who is going to be representing South Windsor High School, having to think about more than just physical skills, she also needs to look at stunting ability, high jumps, good tumbling, and being both mentally and physically flexible.

I am so excited to see what the girls can bring this year to the team and show off all of our skills and progress that we worked so hard on.

“I am so excited to see what the girls can bring this year to the team and show off all of our skills and progress that we worked so hard on,” said Slater.

She is excited to see her new cheerleading team and is awaiting for greatness at tryouts, hoping for a win in the competition this year.

The cheerleading team has done great this fall, already building new skills they have never done in the past year. They have been pushing hard towards competition season, proving to the coach and audiences that they have the ability to make the team.

When it comes to cheerleading there is always an opening to gain new teammates. Freshman Gabby Sozzani, a new teammate trying out, told The Prowl before tryouts, “I’m nervous about coming to the team but I know that the team is very accepting and fun to be around.”

Sozzani is nervous about joining the competition team, believing there’s a chance she won’t make it. As long as she’s determined, though, she believes she can make the team and contribute to it.

The team is very accepting and excited for their new teammates to join. All this makes it easy for new teammates to feel welcomed and ease some of the pressure off of the veterans. There is always the knowledge that there is a spot for everyone, and they mesh together to find the competition season fruitful.
