Man of Steel Comes Out as Bisexual
October 29, 2021
On the 11th of October, the world was met with some unexpected news, the Man of Steel, America’s fictional bodyguard, comes out as bisexual.
Although the character is not the same man we remember; Superman passed the name down to his son, Jonathan Kent who was seen in his new comic book series ‘Superman: Son of Kael-El’ locking lips with another man. Jay Nakamura, a character in the new inclusive series, plays Kent’s love interest. The change was a definite push for what the superhero industry deems normal and impacted the current lives of LGBTQ members that were comic book fanatics in their childhood.
Tony Bravo, a writer for Datebook, and a superman enthusiast responded to the news saying “it’s not just that he’s my first superhero. Superman was really the first superhero to reach worldwide fame.” Bravo continues his support for the hero crediting that he “carries a lot of power….To see a character essential to the creation of the superhero genre in a same-sex embrace feels like a change that will make a lasting difference. That is truly heroic.”
On the other side of Metropolis, some people oppose the decision; Christopher Biggins who spoke upon the situation on “Good Morning Britain” argues that, “If you want to do something like this, do something original” Biggins says focusing on “characters that already exist and [making] them into something they’re not shouldn’t be a thing.” Meanwhile, Ohio senator candidate Josh Mandel says that “the existence of a bisexual Superman is evidence that they are literally trying to destroy America.”
Whether you are throwing the news away, or celebrating with your friends… or by yourself, one thing is certain, this new era will be an interesting and new path for comic books. And for readers at home who are reading this series, anything is possible.
Hey, listen to Superman, “You’re going to make a difference. A lot of times it won’t be huge, it won’t be visible even. But it will matter just the same.”
