UConn Football Struggles

UConn Football Struggles

Tickets for UConn v Vanderbilt football were going for $1. One dollar. Was it even worth the one dollar though?

Last week UConn lost to Vanderbilt 30-28 on a last second field goal from 31 yards out. That loss has officially eliminated them from bowl contention as their game against Yale will not count. UConn is the first team eliminated from contention this season.

UConn starter Tyler Phommachanh exited the game in the first quarter as he suffered a non-contact injury on a quarterback keeper, only going for 41 yards through the air and 18 yards on the ground.

UConn went into the second half down one. They had a chance to take the lead early in the second half but kicker Joe McFadden missed a 22 yard field goal that would have given UConn the lead. That was McFadden’s only miss of the day and it would prove to be a costly one.

UConn scored a touchdown on back-to-back fourth quarter drives taking a one point lead late in the fourth quarter, but UConn wouldn’t be able to deny Vanderbilt as they drove down the field in 1:07 and were able to cash in a 31 yard field goal to win 30-28.

It stings, for sure,” Krajewski said. “Very emotional in the locker room right now. We want that one back, for sure. We’ve got to wake up tomorrow and get to work.”

UConn is coming off of back to back last second losses, one to Wyoming on a missed 2 point conversion, and now a loss on a last second field goal to Vanderbilt though Lou Spanos likes the progress his                                                                team has been making, “First of all, I think the culture is changing for the better,” Spanos said. “The team is on the same page. Also, you see the special teams performing at a higher level. You see the offense getting in sync and you see the defense playing better football”.

After former Coach Randy Edsall got fired mid-season there has been clear improvement by UConn football. From losing by 10 to FCS Holy Cross to competing with an undefeated Wyoming team, then turning around and almost beating SEC Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt, yet awful, is still a Power 5 team.

UConn has one of the best chances to grab a win next weekend as they UMass, another team who hasn’t won yet. The last time UConn won a football game was back in 2019 when they beat, yes UMass. Both teams have not won a game before COVID hit.
