Last Friday, the NFL handed out some of the most severe punishments in its league history. As a result of the massive brawl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football, the NFL came down harder than usual. 

For anyone unfamiliar with what happened, here is a brief summary. Near the end of the Browns and Steelers game on Thursday night, Browns DE Myles Garrett and Steelers QB Mason Rudolph got into a massive physical altercation, that was headlined by Garrett’s swing of Rudolph’s helmet that connected with Rudolph’s head. Garrett, as well as Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey and Browns DT Larry Ogunjobi, were ejected for their actions. 

Garrett was suspended indefinitely without pay for the rest of the season and the playoffs if the Browns get into them in the first place. Garrett was also handed an additional fine for his actions. 

 “I made a terrible mistake,” Garrett said in a statement. “I lost my cool and what I did was selfish and unacceptable. I know that we are all responsible for our actions and I can only prove my true character through my actions moving forward. I want to apologize to Mason Rudolph, my teammates, our entire organization, our fans and to the NFL. I know I have to be accountable for what happened, learn from my mistake and I fully intend to do so.”

Pouncey was handed a 3 game suspension without pay and was handed an additional fine. Pouncey is expected to appeal, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. Ogunjobi was suspended for one game without pay and handed an additional fine. Rapoport added that Ogunjobi is also appealing his punishment, per a source with knowledge of the situation. 

Many fans are questioning as to why Steelers QB wasn’t handed a suspension for the altercation. While Garrett did do most of the damage in the altercation, some people that Rudolph was the instigator of the incident.
