Here’s What’s Special About The 2019 Lollapalooza Lineup
May 27, 2019
Last weekend, the Lollapalooza 2019 lineup was officially announced and many people are smiling from ear to ear at the news. The annual summer music festival will go on for 4 days instead of a normal music festival 3 day duration, which is something that Lollapalooza started back in 2016 in honor of the event’s 25th anniversary. This year, the Chicago event will be held at Grant Park from August 1st to August 4th.
To kick off the party, The Strokes and The Chainsmokers will be headlining for over 100,000 people on Thursday. Many people took to social media to express their excitement over The Strokes because the group had gone on a long hiatus until they started to resurface around 2011. Casablancas even stated in the past that he doesn’t “feel anything” when he performs with The Strokes. This emotional disconnect from the band left supporters feeling distraught, but things have been looking up for them in recent years. With The Strokes spending more time together to write music and perform, many people think it just makes sense for the long time indie-rock band to headline the heaven for indie lovers; Lollapalooza. Following them, a plethora of skilled artists will be performing their own sets. Including Hozier, Saba, Lauren Daigle, Fitz and the Tantrums, King Princess, and much more.
On Friday, the headliners will be the extraordinary names of Childish Gambino and Tame Impala. With over 150 acts among the 4 days and 8 stages, these two are expected by many lollapalooza attendees to be the highlight of their weekend. Tame Impala, or Kevin Parker some might say, is practically known as the God of psychedelic music for recent generations. Releasing music since around 2007, Tame Impala is experienced and has put on many shows before this shindig. With warm melodies and hypnotizing synths, the Australian musician never fails to satisfy his supporters and new listeners. A twitter user even stated, “I swear each Tame Impala song brings me into a whole different dimension.” Childish Gambino, otherwise known as Donald Glover, is on a completely different vibe than Impala with his soulful R&B and hip-hop discography. Yet, he is still causing a wave of excitement amongst the lollapalooza community. The multifaceted artist is well-known for his hits “Redbone” (2016) and “3005” (2013). With 2016 having an ongoing reputation with the younger generations for having an amazing summer, fans are hoping to relive it with his performance as he had a huge presence that year in the music industry. Senior, Nathan Curameng, is even planning on seeing Gambino with his friends this summer at Lolla, stating, “I’m so excited. I have to see him, that’s my idol.”
But just as the Friday acts are expected to set the bar pretty high, Saturday will make history… literally. Colombian singer, J Balvin, will be the first Latino to ever headline Lollapalooza. Paving the way for future crossover stars, Balvin is ready to perform a plethora of songs in Spanish for all to enjoy. This is expected to change the face of music festivals in the United States as Spotify and Apple Music stats are showing that more people in America are actively listening to music in the Spanish language than in past years. The fun-loving reggaeton artist has always encouraged other Latino musicians to have no limits, he believes in uniting everyone through music no matter where the are from or what language they speak. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the “Mi Gente” singer stated, “I make music for everybody. I’m down to change people’s minds, I’m down to just refresh the world.” Furthermore, he once told CNN, “Just because you are Latino does not mean you can’t be global,” so it’s not a surprise to many of his fans that he will be making history this year.
Last but not least, the whistle-tone singer Ariana Grande and musician/DJ Flume will be topping it all off for the music loving party-goers. With all of the unfortunate events that Grande has had to deal with the past few years, tons of fans are coming out to Lolla2019 to support her and bring some positivity her way. Many supporters of the pop star have already made flight arrangements and bought their tickets to come see her specifically. Senior, Mariella Novo, is going to Lollapalooza as a graduation gift with friends and expressed her excitement by saying, “I feel like seeing Ariana Grande is going to be a spiritual experience for me.” With this one of a kind lineup of diverse artists and strong support for the headliners, the actual outcome of this year’s annual Lollapalooza music festival has high expectations.
