This last month, Alexandra Gomes-Ferres is among several students selected as a student of the month. Alex can be described by her peers as funny, down-to-earth, and stylish. Not only has Alex kept up with her grades despite the crippling “senioritis” she admits to suffer from, but she has also been recognized for her hard work at local Mexican restaurant Mexicali over on Sullivan Avenue where she has discovered her love of business management. There are many things about the hardworking senior that you may not know about, so I’ve sat down with her to ask her a few questions:

Why you love working at Mexicali?

“I love working at mexicali. Right now I am looking to be a bartender once I turn 18 and I can also officially be assistant manager. Right now, because I am 17, I am a hostess, a busser, a food runner and am learning, from my boss, the process of managing a restaurant. I really like the people I work with because we’re like family and genuinely care about each other. Also because I’ve worked so hard I have gained great opportunities such as getting raises. Money is very important to me.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I am going to Hartford Uconn next year.”

What is something you like about high school?

“I don’t like anything about highschool. I just want to leave.”

Why do you think you got student of the month?

“I don’t know. I hate school. I just try to get A’s in my class so I can have a week off when I get exempt from finals”

Favorite thing to do in your free time?

“I like sleeping because whenever I have free time it means I’m not working”

Many high school students can relate to a few things that Alex mentions in her responses, especially her love of sleeping and working.  However, there are still a few things about Alex that hasn’t been touched on yet. This includes the fact that she was a student at Orchard Hill Elementary and Two Rivers Magnet Middle School before attending South Windsor High School. Alex is also super fond of makeup. In her free time, she experiments with new pallets and looks forward to doing her makeup every morning before school very early. In the past, she has mentioned that she enjoys using makeup not to cover up her insecurities, but because it makes her feel confident and she loves being able to express herself with a little bit of color. Alex is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and she has always been unapologetic about her somewhat harsh attitude.

“It’s just who I am,” states Gomes-Ferres. “I’ve learned to be independent because I really am not interested in highschool and the people’s drama. I don’t care about what other people do or even think of me. “

Alex really knows who she is. Best of luck to the 2019 graduate.
