On Sunday, January 13, CNN aired its new four-part miniseries about how America’s fashion choices have changed based on the political, economic, and social culture of the decade. The show American Style, is showed back-to-back episodes at 9 and 10 this past Sunday, and will broadcast the other two parts on January 20, again at 9 and 10. The docuseries uses archived footage from the different decades as well as clips of interviews with fashion experts and cultural figures such as Tim Gunn from project runway, Donna Karan who owns DKNY, and Carson Kressley from Queer Eye.

The first episode focuses on style from the 1940’s / 50’s, with discussion on how WWII and Hollywood prospered the fashion industry. They also explored the trends of the time period including the zoot suit and the bikini. Their second episode focuses on the 60’s/70’s, and focuses on youth culture and the extremities of politics. The third and fourth episodes are charted to explore the 80’s into the 2000’s. The episodes are available at CNN.com/go, on the CNN app, and on demand via cable/satellite systems.

Junior, Morgan Saylor, discussed her opinion on the idea of a fashion-culture tv show, and her feelings were unexpected. “I feel like it’s not a good idea, because I don’t think it’s a good representation of how America is and how diverse it’s culture is, and it’s being stereotypical.” Although Saylor has not seen the show, there is always an initial opinion generated from just a description.
