For as long as most students can remember, the South Windsor High School pep rally has always been held inside the gym. But this year, there’s a big change, the pep rally will be outside on the football field. The decision comes after the school’s growing population made it harder to fit everyone comfortably in the gym.
In the past, students packed into the bleachers and sat on the floor, which made things feel tight and uncomfortable. With this year’s large freshman class, there simply isn’t enough space for the entire school to gather indoors.
Moving the pep rally outside means there’s finally room for everyone, and for more games and activities. In the gym, the basketball court limited what could be done, but this year, Student Council has planned for the games to take place between the 40-yard lines.
“This is going to give us more space for activities,” said Bobcat Student Council Advisor Mrs. Stewart. “It’s also going to be much more comfortable for the students.”
Since the pep rally is being held outdoors, one fan-favorite game is finally making a comeback , the balloon pop. The game had been off-limits in the gym because the noise was too loud, but this year it’s approved and ready to go. The captains of the fall sports teams, along with a few teammates, will compete in the challenge.

“I think the games will be much better to watch with all the space, and they picked better games this year,” said senior Evan McLennan.
Of course, there are a few new challenges with being outside. The cooler October weather might make things a little chilly, and some students didn’t realize the event was being moved outdoors.
“It’s an interesting new idea and there’s going to be more space,” said senior Ikkyu Raviwongse. “But I think it’s going to be freezing, and I’m not looking forward to that.”
Even with the cold weather, many students are optimistic that the change will make the pep rally more fun for everyone. With more space, better games, and the whole school together, this year’s pep rally could end up being one to remember.
