The South Windsor Public Library hosted its annual Scarecrow Contest on October 12, 2025, giving local organizations and businesses a chance to showcase their creativity.
Participants set up their scarecrows on Saturday, October 11. Community voting ran from October 11 through October 18, and the winner was announced at 4pm on October 18.
Most of the scarecrows were placed in front of the main entrance on the Library green between the building and library walkway. However, some of the scarecrows were also placed outside of the South Windsor Community Center.
This year’s contest is the first to feature community voting through a collaboration between multiple town departments and community members. It’s also the first time a prize from Foster Family Farm will be awarded. A 4 pack of tickets to the Foster Family corn maze was the prize.
The South Windsor Public Library has fond memories of families coming together to make scarecrows and enjoy the festive fall decorations. Inspired by similar contests in other communities, the library decided to host its own Scarecrow Contest to bring more seasonal fun to town. The goal was to add another exciting community event for residents to enjoy and for the library to take part in.
“Last year, we hosted a pumpkin painting party and it was such a success. I wanted to add another fun fall event for the patrons of the library and the community as a whole,” South Windsor Public Library Librarian Circulation Supervisor Cindy King told The Prowl.

The scarecrow contest is an opportunity for the businesses, patrons, and community organizations to be part of a town event by showing off their creativity. It benefits the community by adding more fun and creativity to the community center and library.
There were 14 scarecrows for the town to vote on in the scarecrow contest. The names of these 14 scarecrows include Sunflower, Raggedy Ann, Sally & Jack, Max, Onion, and Farmer Girl.
All were invited to vote for their favorite scarecrow. In the main circulation desks of both the Library and the Community Center is where the voting took place.
Online voting was also available on the library webpage – www.southwindsorlibrary.org. Facebook users were able to vote for their favorite scarecrow through the social media posts that contain pictures of each scarecrow.
“The library hosts a Halloween parade every year, the staff dresses up, there are fun activities and trick or treating at different stations around the library,” Librarian Circulation Supervisor Cindy said. “We are hoping that the scarecrow contest becomes an annual event that the community looks forward to every year also.”
The competition was competitive with 14 outstanding scarecrows this year.
