South Windsor High Schools Student Council has started off the year with a plethora of fresh ideas, specifically revolving around the Homecoming Pep Rally. This year’s Pep Rally will be held on October 23rd, the day of the Homecoming Football Game.
While the Pep Rally itself has been a tradition for decades, the Student Council is adding a new twist and incorporating class competitions, where each grade goes head-to-head for the ultimate Homecoming prize (and, of course, bragging rights).
A key element of the class competitions is color wars; spirit for the school day and Pep Rally. Each grade has been assigned a color (Freshmen: white, Sophomore: Maroon, Junior: Gray, Senior: Black) and is asked to dress wearing clothing that color for the specific day.
In addition, every class has its own custom designed shirts created by their class officers. Students may purchase a shirt for $15 and a portion of each sale goes directly back to that class’s funds to support future events and activities: prom and senior reception.
This event will raise the levels of school spirit and allow them to appear more uniform on the day of the Pep Rally. In addition, every shirt purchased earns points for the class during the Pep Rally competitions and each order automatically enters the student(s) into a Pep Rally raffle with surprise prizes.
“I think it’s not only a good way to bring up school spirit but it also helps raise money,” said sophomore Nishka Singh to the Prowl.
Although color wars is a common tradition with many schools participating in this spirit day, the student council has worked to expand the reach of this tradition by providing each class with a customized shirt in their color that they can purchase for the day of the Pep Rally.
The student council is looking to raise school spirit, and give each grade an easy fundraising opportunity within the first few weeks of the school year.
“We are very excited for this year’s pep rally as we believe it will foster more school spirit and an environment full of fun competition for the student body,” Student Council President Eliza Blanchfield told the Prowl.
The Pep Rally is different and refreshing with a new concept that no one has seen before. Students and staff are looking forward to the new style of school spirit, and waiting in anticipation for the 2025 Pep Rally.
The Student Council is looking forward to seeing their work come together, and hopefully a rejuvenated sense of Bobcat Pride within the student body.
