On Friday, October 10th, South Windsor High School’s Girls Soccer Program hosted their annual Pink Out game against Edwin O. Smith High School. This special dedication game is held every October in order to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.
Despite all the excitement surrounding the game, the Lady Bobcats were able to maintain their composure and focus on the task at hand. Their ball movement, communication, and aggressive defense was able to create multiple goal scoring opportunities.
When asked what the team had accomplished during the game, senior captain Sam Roux replied, “We switched the field confidently and quickly to maintain intensity throughout the team.”
The first goal was scored in the 26th minute in the first half by senior Sierra Farrabelo. After a corner kick was taken by senior captain Mia Ruiz, Farrabelo tracked down the ball in the box and finished it off to give the Cats’ a 1-0 lead.
“Scoring in this game honestly meant a lot to me because a family member of mine had just beat breast cancer and for her to come and watch the game felt really special,” Farrabelo told The Prowl.
After halftime, the Bobcats hoped to put the game away in the second half and came out strong by pressuring the opposing team.
Their chance to increase the lead came when a shot by sophomore Gianna Disalvatore led to a corner kick. The Bobcats took advantage of this opportunity, and sophomore Kylah Wood buried a header into the back off the net.

“We were only up by 1 and knew if we could get another off that corner it would help out momentum. Mia always delivers a great ball into the box, so I just tried to be in the right place at the right time,” Wood explained.
Finishing the game, the last two goals were scored by Roux and Ruiz to ensure a 4-1 win for the Lady Bobcats.
In previous years, the Girl’s Soccer team has faced East Hartford which has resulted in a less competitive game. When asked how she felt about the change in intensity, Farrabelo stated that she “really enjoyed the Pink Out game this year because we had better competition than previous years so it was a lot more fun.”
These hard games push the team to be a better and overall stronger team.
Despite these slight differences, the team camaraderie was present nonetheless by displaying pink eyeblack, pink ribbons, and pink socks on both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.
“Everyone did a great job participating in the pink out spirit and cheering throughout the game,” said senior Gabriella Disalvatore.
The Pink Out game was not only a great success for the team but also for the booster club. Every year, the SWHS Girl’s soccer booster club organizes a bake sale with donated goods from students, families, and even teachers. 100% of the sales are donated to the Breast Friends Fund which takes these funds and puts them toward Metastatic Breast Cancer Research at the Yale Cancer Center.
Make sure to support the Bobcats at their next game on Tuesday, October 14th, at Dillon Stadium to celebrate their Senior Night.
