Following the devastating fire that struck the home of the Burke family in July, Burke Ridge Farms is not only continuing to sell mums to support the damage to their home, but they are also receiving immense help from the community in an attempt to save the thousands of flowers that were affected by the fire.
Burke Ridge Farms is a hotspot for families when it comes to buying fall decorations and food products. One of their best sellers is their seasonal mums that are grown at their house, just a few doors down from the farm.
“The mums we got from Burke Ridge are gorgeous and blooming so nicely! And highly recommend stopping by one evening for ice cream, the farm stand has all the cozy fall vibes (especially at sunset),” customer, Meghan Siracusa said.
However, this fall season, these mums are more than just a doorstep decoration.
Due to the fire, the Burke family’s house was lost along with many of their precious possessions. It was assumed that along with their possessions, their beloved mums would be destroyed. However, due to the effort and positive spirit of the community, the unthinkable happened.
Residents of all ages, inhabiting towns ranging from South Windsor to Ellington arrived quickly in response to the tragedy, and worked not just as a community, but as a family to help preserve the mums. Many helping hands contributed to harvesting the mums as quickly as possible before the burnt soil could cause them to deteriorate.
Each fire mum sold this season holds a deeper meaning, as they were rescued by a resident who volunteered their time and energy towards preserving this family tradition. Not only is every purchase supporting the family financially following the tragedy, but each mum also symbolizes the perseverance and unity of the community.
Despite the loss the Burke Family had to endure this summer, the mums have created a source of light in a time of darkness.

“I’ve bought indoor and outdoor plants from Burke Ridge for years. Have had ice cream there many times. It seems even more appropriate to support this local business now as they recover from a devastating fire,” South Windsor resident and yearly customer Carol Manzella, told The Prowl.
This fall season, the Burke family hopes people will continue to visit their farm and support their family as they recover from their devastating losses. Besides the fire mums, the farm offers plenty of attractions, ranging from animals to pets, meat to purchase, and ice cream to enjoy with friends and family. This fall favorite is a town landmark for memories and family fun. This year, the meaning of each visit is more significant than ever before.
