As the clock turned to 6:00 PM on Monday, September 15, the South Windsor Bobcats girls soccer team traveled to Sage Perk in Berlin to battle the Redcoats. Fresh off a 1-0 upset victory over defending champion Lewis Mills, the ‘Cats looked to build off their momentum.
The Bobcats were able to weave together a series of great passes, building from the back numerous times. Their defense maintained composure and displayed their skills well. The movement with the ball allowed the Bobcats to get multiple opportunities and shots on goal.
“It’s nice to see how the team’s chemistry translates into our playing on the field,” senior captain Mia Ruiz said.
The first goal was made from a corner kick by sophomore striker and reigning all-state selection Kylah Wood.
“Before that goal I knew I needed to score before halftime to put us up. Then when I saw Mia go take that corner, and I was unmarked, it was the right place and right time,” Woods told The Prowl.
Despite only netting one goal, the Bobcats held pressure on the Redcoats keeper for nearly the entire first half. Knowing that only one goal wouldn’t get the job done, they came out of halftime looking to quickly add to their score.
Early into the second half, another goal was scored off of an assist from Kylah Wood by senior Captain Ariana Rosario.
A 3-0 score vanished quickly when Berlin finally got their opening and scored two goals to cut the lead to just one. In the blink of an eye, the ‘Cats comfortable lead became an uncomfortable one.
Trying to keep the team from blowing their lead, senior captain Sam Roux knew she had to hold the team together. “I keep the team motivated by staying focused and being positive. The team passed very well, and we can improve on shooting on frame” Roux said.
The Bobcats did not get discouraged, though, as they kept their pressure up as Wood managed to score a hat trick with her third goal of the game.
“Being a captain affects the team because I am responsible for holding everyone accountable and giving 100% everyday,” Roux said.
When all was said and done, the ‘Cats left with a 4-2 victory, giving them their second consecutive win and third on the season. The Bobcats are back in action on Thursday, September 18 at home as they host the Northwest Catholic Lions, looking to extend the South Windsor win streak to three.
