The South Windsor boys soccer season has been steady and on the uprise ever since the end of the offseason. The ‘Cats have played 3 games so far: one against Avon that resulted in a 1-1 tie, a 7-0 win over Manchester, and most recently against Lewis Mills that ended in a 3-1 win.
Assistant Coach Jeff Russel is returning for his second year with the Bobcats varsity soccer program. Prior to last year, the varsity squad never had an assistant next to head coach Peter Lepak, who has been leading the team for 12 years. His addition to the squad brings success into the players mentality on and off the field.
Russel spoke to The Prowl about his thoughts for the year, saying “This year’s team blends talent, cohesion, and leadership across the roster with a commitment to showing up — in the offseason, in practice, and on gameday.”
The ‘Cats had a far from perfect season last year, and are looking forward to bouncing back this season
Senior Captain Jaxson Hills looks forward to his leadership role this season, having played soccer for a very long time.
This year’s team consists of many returning starters as compared to last year, such as Blake & Riley Lyons, Younes Merzougui, Francheso Linares, Junior Heredia, Dalton Crane, and many more.
These players are crucial to the success of the squad, being threats to opposing defenders on the field. If the ‘Cats make a deep run in the CCC this year, they will most likely be the reason why.
Head Coach Peter epak looks to lead the team forward this upcoming year, not only to make a deep run in the playoffs, but to continue on for the years to come. Coaching soccer for over 20 years, he has built the South Windsor soccer program to what it is today.
The Bobcats do not have an easy schedule coming up, and will have to maintain focus in order to perform consistently throughout the season. With a battle against Newington on Tuesday at Newington High School, the ‘Cats will look forward to trying to maintain their undefeated start.
