South Windsor High School seniors gathered behind the school to take part in the annual rock signing ceremony, a tradition marking the start of senior year, on Tuesday September 9, 2025. Organized by the staff, and heavily supported by the student body, the event brings the Class of 2026 together during lunch waves for a unique and memorable experience. What took place here was more than just signing a rock, it was the start of a memorable year and a core memory that students will have for the rest of their lives.
Throughout the afternoon, seniors lined up to add their names of a rock that has become a symbol of senior pride on campus. So much excitement in the air it was undeniable, the students took turns writing their names and showing their individuality.
Eva Kamm is a senior who feels connected to the tradition through family.
“I think the rock signing is cool because my siblings and cousins signed the same rock when they were seniors,” Kamm said.
On the same day the seniors also signed a large white canvas, which happens to be another long standing tradition. This canvas now hangs in the main hallway outside the cafeteria, where it will be on display for the rest of the school year for the students and staff to see.
Sofia Barona, another senior participant, reflected on the significance of the event.
“We were embracing transition and leaving our mark,” Barona said
Rock signing is a fun and enjoyable activity, but it has a deeper meaning behind it for many. It represents the accomplishments, memories, and the beginnings of the final chapter. For some it’s a special way of leaving their mark, for others its a personal reminder of friendship and growth.
Ava Natal, a senior looking ahead to graduation, added, “As we do these little events, I feel like we are one step closer to graduating.”
Now covered in all types of unique signatures, the rock will stay in place until next year, when a new group of seniors will carry on this yearly tradition. For the class of 2026, this marks not only the start of their senior year but also the beginning of the end of their high school journey.
